지브롤터는 에스파냐의 이베리아 반도 남단에서 지브롤터 해협을 향하여 남북으로 뻗어 있는 반도로서, 영국의 직할식민지이다. 면적은 6.5㎢, 인구는 2만 7900명(2004)이다.

해협을 마주보며 깎아지른 듯한 바위산 '지브롤터 바위'가 서 있다. 바위산의 절벽과 급사면 위에는 해군기지가 구축되어 있으며 제2차 세계대전 중에는 바위산의 일부를 닦아 비행장을 만들었다. 또 해면을 간척하여 평지를 확대하였으며, 그와 동시에 운하를 파고, 바위산을 꿰뚫어 터널 수를 늘림으로써 이 요새를 더욱 강화하였다. '바위'의 서쪽은 항구로 이용되고 있으며, 군항 및 자유무역항으로서 붐빈다.
